Installing a fence in your yard can offer many benefits—it can provide privacy, improve the appearance of your home, increase your home’s resale value, and make your yard a safer place for pets and kids. However, there are a few things you should consider before you call your fence company to schedule the installation. Continue reading to find out more.
Select a Material with the Right Maintenance Needs
Different types of fencing have different maintenance needs. If you want a fence that will require very little time and effort to maintain, consider installing a vinyl fence. Vinyl fencing comes in a variety of styles and colors—there are even options that resemble natural wood but require a fraction of the maintenance.
Identify the Intended Purpose of the Fence
Before installing your fence, consider what purpose you want the fence to serve. Are you primarily looking to improve your yard’s privacy, or do you want a fence that will keep your pet safely enclosed in your yard? Determine exactly why you want a fence, and then choose an option that will provide the functionality you need.
Choose a Style that Matches Your Home
There are many different styles of fencing available today. Contact your fencing company and ask about the styles they carry, and then choose one that complements your home. If you have a traditional home, a classic picket fence may be your best choice. For a more modern home, a simple and clean privacy fence is a great option.
Check Neighborhood Requirements
If you are a member of a homeowners’ association, there may be limitations in place for building a fence. Different cities or counties may also have specific regulations. Check to make sure that the fence you want to build will meet all requirements in your area before you begin installation. You should also let your neighbors know about your intention to build a fence.

One of the greatest advantages of vinyl fencing is that it requires very little maintenance. You will not have to worry about repainting or resealing your fence—all you’ll have to do to keep your vinyl fence looking like new is clean it once each season.
To effectively clean your vinyl fence, you’ll need a non-abrasive scrubbing pad, a few old towels, a bucket full of warm water, and a garden hose with a spraying nozzle. You will also need a mild cleanser—dish soap works well. Use the hose on the strongest spray setting to dislodge dirt and debris from your entire fence. You should clean from the bottom of the fence up for the best results. When you are done spraying, mix a small amount of soap into the bucket of water, dip a towel into the soapy water, and use it to wipe down the fence. You can scrub away any stubborn grime using the scrubbing pad. When you are done, rinse the entire fence with the hose.

You take pride in your garden—you work hard to ensure that your plants have all of the sunlight, nutrients, and water they need to grow, and you make sure that your garden remains weed-free. You can improve your garden even more by enclosing it with a fence. Here are a few tips to help you select the best fence style for your garden.
Find the Right Height
Fencing comes in a variety of height options. Finding the right fence height for your garden will depend on your goals for the fence. If you want your garden fence to add privacy, look for a fence that is between five and six feet tall. A fence this tall will also help keep unwanted animals out of your garden. Make sure that the shadow of the fence won’t add too much shade to your garden, as this may affect the health of your garden’s plants.
Consider the Space between Slats
When you are selecting a fence style for your garden, be sure to consider how much space is between each of the slats in the fence. Dogs love to dig in garden soil, while rabbits and other pests may enjoy nibbling on your flowers or vegetables. If you are building a fence with the intention of keeping animals out, you should make sure that the slats are close enough together to stop these pests from wriggling through.
Look for an Appealing Aesthetic
Your garden fence should be both beautiful and functional. If you have a formal flower garden, a delicate picket fence can add the perfect finishing touch. If you have a more rustic country garden, consider a ranch-style fence with broad horizontal slats. Be sure to consider how visible your garden will be from outside the fence if you want to show it off to your neighbors.

An arbor is an outdoor wooden or metal framework providing a shaded archway in a garden or yard, and can be the perfect addition to your fence design. Whether you are looking for a functional or ornamental arbor, use the information below to help you discover tips for adding an arbor to your fence design:
Adding an Arbor as an Entryway
An arbor can be an attractive and functional way to provide limited entry into your yard. Consider pairing a traditional garden arbor with a straight-lined fence for the perfect combination of privacy and visual appeal. Adding a vine to your arbor can offer additional privacy. For a dramatic entryway that functions as the centerpiece of your landscaping, consider a simple latticework fence paired with a large, arched arbor.
Adding an Arbor for Aesthetic Appeal
Arbors used specifically for aesthetic appeal can range from large and dramatic with clean, geometric shapes to small and intricate with detailed trellis work. Keep in mind that your arbor does not have to literally connect to your fence, though it should echo its design in some way so that the two complement one another. Adorning your arbor with vines and plants can add aesthetic appeal while also drawing the eye toward the fixture, creating more privacy throughout the rest of your yard or garden.
Adding an Arbor to Separate Your Garden and Yard
Consider a rose-covered metal arbor to usher guests into your garden oasis. Cream-colored wooden arbors and fences complement the lush greenery of grass and vibrantly blooming flowers, offering another landscaping option for separating your garden and yard.
